New Social Network Service for Mac Users Lacks Accessibility

7 April, 2008 @ 9:09 am by Lioncourt

Last week, a new social networking service was launched for Mac users called Net4Mac. The service requires subscribers to download a Mac OS X application to connect to and use their service.

From what we have been able to determine so far, (which is admittedly limited), the software itself is fairly accessible with VoiceOver. Much of the information is presented as HTML content, and what controls are not labeled do have help tags easily accessed with VO-H. Unfortunately, however, registration requires entering a graphically rendered security code, similar to those found on sites like Google or GoDaddy.com. Unlike those two, however, no audio rendering or alternative methods of registering are available.

We contacted Net4Mac regarding the problem an offering suggestions and help to resolve the issue. We have only received a brief reply suggesting the Mac’s magnification feature. This is, of course, not a viable option for most VoiceOver users, and subsequent requests have not been answered as of this writing. If you are interested in seeing access to this service, we suggest contacting Net4Mac and let your feelings be known.
