Editorial - Don’t Panic: Your First Trip to the Apple Store
17 September, 2008 @ 10:52 pm by LioncourtWe’ve just published a new Lioncourt.com editorial. In "Don’t Panic: Your First Trip to the Apple Store", Josh de Lioncourt provides the basics to get you up to speed with the Mac and VoiceOver before you take your first trip to an Apple Store. The article can be applied to any first-time Mac experience for a blind or visually impaired computer user. Enjoy!

Although I am a person with low vision and hearing, I was computer literate and knew that the VoiceOver cursor existed, but could find no detailed information about VoiceOver. In my first visit to an Apple store, only the existence of VoiceOver was known, and I was directed to the accessibility site where it was suggested I could listen. I politely declined, but it was very helpful to me to find out the existence and address of the site. I got my brother-in-law to search for and print out ‘Getting Started with VoiceOver’ from his iMac. That was my approach to getting detailed information about VoiceOver. I later checked out VoiceOver on my brother-in-law’s iMac before making a decision to buy an iMac.
I use Zoom and the white-on-black option, but it is nice to have VoiceOver as a back-up.
I wish to point out other hurdles. The Apple stores do not deliver to your home. You need to order online (probably with someone’s help) to get home delivery for an iMac. If you have a wireless keyboard and mouse as I do, entering the keyboard recognition code is difficult (it took me 20 tries). Another major hurdle is to set up internet service since the provider expects the customer follow their set up instructions.
