20 July, 2009 @ 3:16 pm by Lioncourt

In episode #4 of the Mac-cessibility Round Table Podcast, knights Darcy Burnard, Holly Anderson, Cara Quinn, and Josh de Lioncourt discuss our impressions of the iPhone 3GS after a few weeks, how VoiceOver for the iPhone has been accepted by the visually impaired community, third-party applications for the iPhone, what Apple has revealed about gestures in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, Safari 4.0.2, the National Federation for the Blind’s reaction to criticism of their VoiceOver review, and more.

  1. TVSoundGuy asserted:

I just finished listening to the Maccessibility podcast #4 and could relate now that I own an iPhone which brings me to this quick and true story.

A friend of mine and I were in a part of Toronto neither of us had been to before. We got out of the subway and she immediately turned down the street saying, “I think south is this way,” at which point I stopped her and said, “Why guess (pulling out new iPhone) when you can be sure?” I opened up the Compass app and we discovered we were about to head in the wrong direction.

As for my thoughts on the podcast, I’m in total agreement regarding the NFB’s skewed review of Voiceover on the Mac. Then again, I reasoned that if the NFB Braille Monitor actually made a difference, it would have been made illegal a long time ago.

What I’d love to see and hear some coverage on are Apple’s new offerings with Logic Studio–Apple’s multitrack audio editor said to be the rival of ProTools. I’ve combed through the Logic pages on Apple and have not seen anything regarding VO accessibility for Logic, which is a little disappointing, especially for me since this is the work I do. Apple was in a great position to give the ProTools people a run for the money with an accessible version of Logic before an accessible version of ProTools.

I’m going to dream big and postulate that Logic’s accessibility will become much more apparent with Snow Leopard. Here’s hoping.

    Great job on the podcast.
