Fring Offers Previous Version to Support Visually Impaired Users

22 October, 2009 @ 10:55 am by Lioncourt

Recently, Fring, a popular service for consolidating various chat and social networking services, updated their iPhone/iPod touch application to version 2, which proved to have some accessibility problems with VoiceOver. In a blog post, they acknowledge the problem and are now offering the previous version as a separate app in the AppStore, meant to service their visually impaired users, presumably until the accessibility issues can be fixed in the current mainstream version. You can find the VoiceOver friendly version of the app by clicking here.

Fring confirmed to me on twitter today that there will be no focus on accessibility in the next release as they’re “rushing” it through. So I think most of us should just stick with the VI version and be glad they put it back in the itunes store and just keep nudging them on this one. They have been pretty forthcoming in communication so lets hope they’ll reintegrate it or at least update the VI version in the future.
