European Commission Contemplates Web Accessibility Legislation

26 October, 2009 @ 11:13 am by Lioncourt

UK tech publication The Register recently published a piece reporting on something quite important which has unfortunately garnered so little attention that it slipped under our notice. Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding discussed the possibility of a "European Disability Act" to compel EU nations to adopt web accessibility rules resulting in all European websites becoming accessible.

Specifically, she proposed the official adoption of The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, a set of guidelines designed to ensure access to web content to individuals with disabilities or who may be using assistive technology, authored by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This would result in improved accessibility to screen reader users, among others, including those utilizing VoiceOver on the Macintosh platform.

It’s a nice gesture, but apart from official government web sites or perhaps those of larger corporations in Europe, it means little. It’s impossible to legislate this problem away, awareness is the only real solution on a medium as vast as the internet.
